Stop the Killing Cut the Beef CDC has given back to the Orange Mound community by showing how vital this area is to the rich history of Memphis, by raising awareness, reinvesting in the community, by focusing on rehabilitating and reconstructing the neighborhood. We provide face to face mentorship, and support in an effort to combat decades of gang violence and gang related activities which have plagued our streets.
Stop The Killing - Cut The Beef (501c3) has a 3 phase strategy plan called "The Orangeprint" consisting of strategic goals that will concentrate on efforts to deal with Gang violence, Blight eradication and housing and urban redevelopment. Youth who see no hope for their future, will be given a vision for progress going forward (even ex-felons will be given 2nd chance opportunities), homeless individuals will see a path toward home-ownership and small business entrepreneurs will be equipped with skills and resources to help them develop their dreams into prosperous futures.
By addressing the gangs and blighted areas we hope to accelerate safer streets and provide efficient use of the underused and unmaintained housing stock, and help to remedy homelessness in the community. These efforts will also lead to increased productive lifestyles (not excluding ex-felons), small business development and increased employment for the Orange Mound Community.
Orange Mound, is a neighborhood located in southeast Memphis, Tennessee. It was THE FIRST African-American neighborhood, in the history of America, to be built by and for African Americans. The Orange Mound subdivision was developed for African Americans in the 1890s to provide affordable land and residences for the less wealthy.
The Orange Mound Community prospered for many decades, until in the 1980's when an infiltration of illegal drugs led to an increase in crime. Urban decay crept in and Orange Mound took a dramatic turn for the worse. In 2006, crime came too close to the home of the Organization's founder, Keith Leachman, when one of his closest friends was gunned down in the Orange Mound Community. "Stop the killing" became an issue of the heart for Keith, and he recognized that most of the beefs on the street could not be cut off or dealt with properly until the community at large became involved in efforts to raise the quality of life for those within and around the Orange Mound Community.
